Statement of Need
Intracranial neurosurgery is becoming increasingly less invasive, leading to improved patient outcomes and shorter hospital stays. The introduction of the endonasal, endoscopic transphenoidal approach to the treatment of pituitary tumors has been a major break- through in the surgical treatment of this disease and will likely become the standard of care in the next decade. However, pituitary tumors are only the fore- front of this surgical revolution and it is becoming increasingly clear that a variety of anterior skull base pathologies such as CSF Leaks, Craniopharyngiomas, Rathke's Cleft Cysts, Chordomas, Meningiomas and Orbital Apex Tumors can also be removed using the Endonasal Endoscopic Approach. It is imperative that physicians become familiar with these new approaches and advances in order to provide the highest possible level of quality patient care.
Educational Objectives
The objective of any CME program is to improve patient care. Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
• Understand the anatomy and radiology of the
paranasal, parasinus and parasellar regions
• Determine which types of pathology are amenable
to endoscopic endonasal resection
• Be familiar with the state-of-the-art endoscopic
and stereotartic equipment used in these approaches
• Recognize and manage a variety of common
complications associated with endoscopic skull
base surgery
